The IT Method For Naming Your Content
“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.”
Well Ms. Juliet Capulet, let me tell you, a name is a big fucking deal! There are countless resources which discuss branding in detail. I’m far from a consultant in that area, but I know that what you choose to name your business, book, TV show, YOURSELF, or any type of creative property can end your game before it begins. I know because to this day, I struggle with the nomenclature process for my brand. Hell, I’ve tussled with naming this very article!
A brand name can make or break you. If it isn’t catchy, easy to pronounce, or easily aligned to your product, confusion will reign supreme. That’s why I suffer through the agonizing naming process to come up with a winner. I’ve fallen short more often than not in my opinion, for a variety of reasons.
It’s difficult for me because I get bored with names quickly. I usually subscribe to the “if it aint broke, don’t fix it” mantra. However, I have this innate ability to find fault in my stuff where others cannot, to the equal benefit and detriment of my creative process. I get annoyed at first, but when I constructively assess the validity of my critiques, I can find more optimal ways to name an article, podcast, website, or series. By then, it’s usually too late because these creative properties have been released to the world, but it assists for my next moves.
The process that’s helped me the best to come up with cool names is the “IT process” (“IT” represents whatever you want to name, btw). You must identify what “IT” is, define what represents “IT”, determine what words first pop into my mind when you think of “IT” then write all the names down and pick the dopest name for “IT”. The “IT” process sounds simple because it is. The difficult part is the words popping into your head, everything else is procedure!
During this 52 Weeks of Content initiative, I’ve worked to expand my mind, challenge myself to produce better, consistent content, and to reevaluate EVERYTHING and make it better. I remind myself constantly that names mean shit if IT sucks. Make sure your articles, poems, or whatever creative property has actual substance and not just a cool name.
I will still agonize over names for my podcasts and video series, but as long as the content is dope I won’t mind. Anything that can assist in the creation of hotter end product is fine by me.
